By Charles Joseph Nicholas
The UST Golden Tigresses crushed the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Lady Generals in straight sets, 25–13, 25–19, 25–15, grabbing their third consecutive win in 2022 Shakey’s Super League at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Sunday morning, October 16.
The Golden Tigresses started the first match of the day with an early three-point lead with the help of rookie outside spiker Xyra Gula’s back-to-back attack against Lady Generals, 5–2. UST suffered three consecutive errors to benefit EAC but it’s still not enough as UST showed dominance throughout the first set with the command of rookie opposite hitter Regina Jurado, resulting in an eight-point lead against EAC, 19–11.
A service error from the Lady Generals gave the Golden Tigresses a free point to nab the set, 25–13.
In the second set, UST held on to their momentum as they struck an early five-point lead, 10–5. EAC tried to keep the match close but succumbed to several service errors resulting in a five-point deficit against UST, 24–19.
Angeli Bacalso ended the second salvo with a powerful spike, 25–19, to have a 2–0 advantage against the Lady Generals.
Come to the third and final set, EAC somehow had their momentum, grabbing an early two-point advantage with the help of Krizza Reyes’ attacks, 6–4. UST quickly regained footing where they gained a 10-point lead, 16–6.
UST took advantage of their opponents’ poor floor defense as Pierre Abellana put an end to the match, 25–15.
The unbeaten Espana-based squad clinched their third consecutive win, 3–0, in Pool B to secure a spot in the next round.
UST looks to continue its dominant campaign against Lyceum of the Philippines’ Lady Pirates, on October 22, at the same venue.
