UST pummels Lady Warriors in straight sets, sends UE on verge of elimination
By Joie Frances Timbas
The UST Golden Tigresses swept the winless UE Lady Warriors, 25–17, 25–16, 25–17, to return to their winning ways in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, on March 29, Wednesday afternoon.
After a tough loss to fellow final four competitor ADU Lady Falcons last weekend, the Tigresses bounced back to improve to a 6–3 standing, placing them on the third spot.
The lopsided match had UST leading most of the time whereas head Coach Kungfu Reyes utilized the whole team to see nine of the 11 UST non-libero players contributing at least two points.
The Lady Warriors tried to steal the third set as they were up by a point at the second technical timeout. But UST annihilated a game-clinching run to finish them off in a clean sweep, 25–17.
Team captain Eya Laure did business as usual as she led the Golden Tigresses with 17 points off 15 attacks, a block, and an ace. Behind her were middle blockers Imee Hernandez and Pia Abbu who nabbed eight and seven points, respectively.
UE had double-digit scorers in KC Cepada and Van Bangayan with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Ja Lana added 10 points.
Coming up next for UST is a crucial, rivalry rematch as they face the still-unblemished DLSU Lady Spikers on Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
UST has been the lone team to take the №1 seeded Lady Spikers to a fifth-set duel this season.
