UST Lady Spikers reign in UAAP Beach Volley

The University of Santo Tomas Lady Spikers defended their crown against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws in UAAP Season 80 beach volleyball tournament at the SM Sands by the Bay last Oct. 14.

While the Tiger Spikers were dethroned by the National University Bulldogs.

The Lady Spikers swept FEU in Game 2, 21–15, 21–19, to secure the title.

Down by 13–19 in the second canto of Game 2, UST unleashed an 8–0 blitz to get their fourth championship, 21–19.

“Inaral na namin yan [sila Pons at Atienza],” UST head coach Paul Jan Doloiras said.

“Talagang hinimay-himay namin kung anong gagawin nilang technique at tinuro na lang namin sa mga bata.”

Caitlyn Viray tallied 18 markers while back-to-back MVP Cherry Rondina contributed 10 points. FEU’s Bernadette Pons and Kyla Atienza combined for 16 points in a losing effort.

In the mens division, the Bulldogs dethroned the Tiger Spikers in a winner-take-all match, 21–16, 14–21, 15–13.

MVP Brian Bagunas sealed the deal with a through-the-block finish, 15–13, denying UST their second straight victory.

Arbasto led UST with 20 points while fifth-year player KR Guzman chipped 12 markers.
