The UST Tiger Paddlers reigned supreme in the UAAP Season 85 table tennis tournament after being able to notch its 16th golden double, Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Makati Coliseum.

This would account for the most golden double in UAAP history (La Salle at second with three). For the Tiger Paddlers Men’s team, this is their 29th championship in 42 seasons.

The UST Tiger Paddlers began their hunt for a third straight championship after a dominant display over the Ateneo Blue Eagles through both of their series in three games.

Alvin Sevilla opened things up for UST as he won a comfortable 3–0 game over Ateneo’s Andrew Uy. Eljey Tormis and the pairing of Prince Garcia and Al Sanchez then put on a gentleman sweep as they won both of their games by 3–1 to give UST the upper hand in their first series matchup.

The second series started with a close game between Sevilla and Ateneo’s Mahindra Cabrido as their game went to five sets. Sevilla eventually came out on top in a close 14–12 win to start things strong for the Tiger Paddlers.

The momentum from that intense match carried on as Tormis and the Garcia-Sanchez pairing swept both of their games to give the Tiger Paddlers a championship in the Men’s category.

In the Girl’s category, the UST Junior Tiger Paddlers dethroned the defending champions De La Salle Zobel’s Girls Team in two matches. This is UST’s third championship in six seasons in the Girl’s category.

Althea Gudes drew first blood as she swept her game against La Salle’s Samarah Buan. Both schools went back and forth as they found themselves tied two apiece and headed on to game number five of their first series.

It was UST’s J-An Sanchez who triumphed after a close game over La Salle’s Althea Salvador.

The second series saw the Junior Paddlers enact dominance as they only dropped their second match en route to a three-to-one victory, securing the Table Tennis Girl’s championship.

UST had a chance to duplicate La Salle’s golden quadruple in table tennis during Season 78 by winning all the table tennis categories, but the Tiger Female Paddlers team and Junior Boys Paddlers team would both finish at second place with La Salle coming out on top of those categories.
