Thomasian appointed Lucena bishop

Pope Francis has appointed a Thomasian as the new bishop of the Diocese of Lucena.
Fr. Mel Rey Uy, the present economer of Romblon Diocese, will succeed Bishop Emilio Maraquez who canonically retired at the age of 75.
A native of Romblon, Uy finished his philosophical studies at the Saint Pius X Seminary in Roxas, Capiz. He completed his theological studies and master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Santo Tomas.
He was ordained priest on May 24, 1994.
Uy also served as the spiritual director of San Lorenzo Seminary from 1995 to 1996 and director of Holy Rosary Academy of Romblon from 1995 to 2000. He was also a parish priest at St. Antonio de Padua Parish of Agnipa from 2004 to 2009.
At present, he is the director the Diocesan Commission on Liturgy and the Diocesan Pastoral Secretariat.
