Rev. Fr. Richard Ang, O.P., the Rector of the University, said that the graduates are assembled only to be dispersed through rituals into different paths from employment to continue excelling in their passion.
Ang emphasized during the 2023 Baccalaureate Mass held at the University Grandstand on Tuesday, May 30, that there is no concrete answer regarding where the graduating students will be after their rites but assured that Thomasians will always stand out.
“I can also see the sprout, plant, and fruit-bearing tree that one day you will become. Everyone has a great potential for an incredible harvest,” Ang said.
He added that the employability rate of Thomasians is very high so he encouraged the graduates to go for it with ease.
“Do not worry, Thomasians always standout. Kapag graduate ng UST ay may kakaibang kalidad sa kilos at gawa,” Ang said.
“Thomasians have their own unique way of being an addition to the functional part of the society in connection to God’s command,” Ang said.
The University rector also mentioned that despite Thomasians starting with very little, they are passionate, persistent, and innovative in making their way to having big names as they offer a high-quality work and service.
“Character empowers people, helps them grow and be productive and invests in character to give you a large yield in the future,” he said.
He then reminded everyone that there is no overnight success and that it takes time and years to fulfil the triumph through maximizing talents, skills and resources.
“Do not rehearse only for your graduation day but also get ready for the life that lies ahead.” Ang said.
He also encouraged the graduates to stay connected with the University as the faith it gave them will be a foundation to survive in all circumstances.
“Stay rooted in your network of friends…Lean on them, on me, reagents, deans, and teachers. We will help you carry on,” he said.
The rector also shared his encounters with some Thomasian alumni and described it as just like being in the University.
Ang noted at the end that he stood by what he said during his inaugural speech last 2019 about wanting Thomasians to be pioneers.
“I would like to see our graduates as trailblazers, initiators, game-changers of society. Thomasians taking the lead and not trailing behind,” he said.
Ang ended the homily with best wishes to the graduating class and encouraged them to be a proud Thomasian.
The Baccalaureate Mass was followed by a post-mass program, a fireworks display, and the traditional recessional walk through the Arch of the Centuries.
The University produced 9,473 graduating students from the 22 colleges for this academic year.
