The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses survived the gritty De La Salle University Lady Archers, 65–62, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum last Sept. 30.

The Lady Archers came to within two points, 58–60, before UST team captain Jhenn Angeles sank three freebies to seal the win for UST.

Despite the win, UST head coach Haydee Ong lamented the team’s 31 turnovers: “We have to work double time, not turning the ball so many times.”

The Tigresses used a 14–4 blitz in the latter half of the 3rd quarter to pull away, 52–45.

UST proved to be too strong in the boards corralling 54 rebounds to DLSU’s 40.

The Tigresses had five players scoring in twin digits led by team captain Jhenn Angeles with 13 points and 10 boards, while Bets Peñaflor added 11 markers and 15 boards.

DLSU’s Charmaine Torres contributed 17 points and two assists in a losing effort.

UST strengthened its hold on the second seed, now with a 5–1 card.

Tigresses will next face the UE Lady Warriors on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at the Blue Eagle Gym.
