Growling Tigers fall short against UP in UAAP Opener

The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers ran out of gas versus the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 73–74, in UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Sunday.

Tied 71-apiece, Marvin Lee banked two free throws, 73–71. After UP’s timeout, Paul Desiderio’s sank a trey to win the game, 74–73.

Down by 11-points in the third quarter, Steve Akomo’s dunk capped a 13–3 run to tied the game, 49-all.

Skipper Lee led UST with 20 points while Akomo had a double-double performance with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Desiderio scored team-high 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Growling Tiger will next face the Adamson University Soaring Falcons on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
